The Spirit of the Almond Blossom Festival

If you ask what makes the almond trees bloom, we would say: love. Just as the branches burst into blossom when Demophon embraced Phyllis—who had transformed into an almond tree—and just as the clouds embrace the mountains, the earth the sea, and the winds the waists of the boats in Datça, so too do the people of Datça embrace nature with love. The almond trees cannot resist the power of this love; they simply open their blossoms. For spring lies ahead—a time of light and abundance. Impatient blossoms greet the world and those who stand for labor, beauty, and brotherhood. People come together—women and men, young and old—and almond blossoms bloom in their hearts as well. From Balıkaşıran to Knidos, the villages stir to life; folk songs are sung, arms are linked, and dances are performed. Centenarian grandmothers rise and sing *mani* verses about the earth, nature, and the almond; farmers step into their fields, women’s cheeks flush pink, and the blood of children runs a little livelier. The peninsula comes alive with festivity; a joyful commotion begins.
What does it mean for a flower to bloom? Have you ever thought about it? Above all, it is hope—a harbinger of the future. It is an awakening—shaking off the lethargy of winter and the stillness of the dormant earth. It is abundance—the generosity of soil, sun, and rain. It is birth—feeling the energy of life.
It is persistence—resolutely opening one’s eyes year after year, never tiring. Can a person look at a flower and harbor thoughts of evil? Can one give in to despair or feel defeated?
Now, we too are planting an almond sapling in this ancient soil. We will nurture our tree as it grows. Its cold-resistant buds will bloom, and its roots will reach deep into the earth. Its blossoms will smile at the world. There will be room for all of us in the shade of that tree—for you, for me, for the soil, and for the animals. This is an intention; it is the excitement of coming together, the joy of sharing, the peace of a fraternal embrace, and the longing to smile with delight at the life springing forth from the earth. Our call goes out to you, to the land, and to the future.
Welcome, everyone, to the Datça Municipality Almond Blossom Festival.
